Artists' Residency Programme > Public Access

Artists participating in the Artists’ Residency Programme make themselves as available as possible to meet with visitors to the Museum, providing access to the process of making art and giving the public an additional layer of experience to that available in the Museum’s galleries. This element of the Residency Programme is probably the most important, as it helps dispel some of the mystery surrounding the production of art.

The emphasis is on providing access to as wide an audience as possible and furthering the understanding of how and why art is made through direct contact with working artists. A series of slide talks, studio visits, panel discussions and open days are organised around the residencies, all of which are free and open to the public. Artists participating in the Residency Programme are also asked to participate in the Talks & Lectures Programme.

The Process Room

Located on the West Wing, first floor galleries, the Process Room facilitates the display of work in progress by artists currently working on the Artists’ Residency Programme. The purpose of the Process Room is to reveal the processes involved in the creation, exhibition and consideration of contemporary art, which are often hidden from public view. The Process Room aims to display a flavour of what is ongoing in the studio environment and each artist on the work programme will exhibit their work for a two-week period during their residency.

Aoife Collins's (Ireland) works in the Process Room (29 June to 11 July 2010) revolve around appropriated commonplace mass-produced objects and images which have been altered, manipulated or copied. There is no Release My Darling presents a selection of mixed media works which have been developed over the duration of being an artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Artists’ Residency Programme Open Studios
Wednesday afternoons throughout May: 2pm - 4pm, Artist Studios, IMMA
Artists Pascal Bircher (UK) – Studio 6A, Atsushi Kaga (Japan) – Studio 14, and Jasmina Llobet and Luis Fernandez-Pons (Spain) – Studio 12, currently participating in the Museum’s Artists’ Residency Programme, will open their studios to visitors from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays in May. Visitors will be able to see the variety of work being produced by the artists currently participating in the programme, meet the artists and discuss their work with them. The Artists’ Residency Programme studios are located in the former coach houses across from the main reception. This is an open event and does not require booking. Please check with the main reception or email bealtaine@imma.ie to ensure the artists listed are available on the given Wednesday.

The Reading Room

Positioned opposite the reception desk on the ground floor of the Museum the Reading Room facilitates the visual and written representations of the artists on the Artists’ Residency Programme. Consisting of eight notice boards with one per artist the public are welcome to familiarise themselves with the artists in the studios and their work. Information such as interviews, proposals, press and images is available on each artist and further information can be accessed by going to the studios to meet the artists.
